A violent incident at a nearby public park Monday morning left at least two dead and has prompted heightened safety awareness across the local community, though officials emphasize there is no ongoing threat.
According to reporting from CNN and WRAL, what began as a planned fight between two groups of young people at Leinbach Park escalated into a shooting involving multiple individuals. Police said the groups had arranged to meet at the park to fight, but the situation quickly intensified, resulting in multiple people exchanging gunfire.
Authorities received an initial call around 9:52 AM, reporting a fight in progress, according to a CNN article titled, “2 killed after a planned fight near a North Carolina middle school turns into a mass shooting, police say” by Holly Yan. While officers were en route, the call was upgraded to a shooting as the situation escalated.
Winston-Salem Police stated that multiple people began shooting at each other during the altercation. Law enforcement responded quickly to secure the scene and begin an investigation.
Nearby schools, including Jefferson Middle School and Mount Tabor High School, were briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution, WRAL reported. Officials later confirmed the schools and surrounding area are safe and resumed normal operations, though some road closures in the area caused traffic disruptions. CNN also reported that parents were asked to use alternate routes due to blocked access points.
By midday, police said all suspects and victims had been identified and located, according to associated press at WRAL. CNN reports that authorities described the incident as isolated but noted that the investigation remains ongoing.
Leinbach Park and several surrounding roads remain closed as officers continue to process the scene.
This is a developing story. The Salemite will continue to report further details as they become available.
