About Us

The Salemite has been the uncensored voice for Salem College since 1920 and is run today by a close knit staff of student writers, photographers, and editors. Based in journalistic integrity and creative expression, The Salemite is dedicated to providing the Salem College campus with a student-run publication.
In 2010, The Salemite was converted to an online news blog and then resumed print publication in 2013. During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Salemite halted online and print production. In 2024, a group of students came together to reinstate The Salemite‘s online and print presence on campus.
Since its resurrection, under the leadership of Editor In Chief, Sara Vargas (2024-2025), and Editor In Chief, Clare Buchanan (2025-2026), The Salemite has expanded to be one of the largest clubs on campus, cultivating one print issue per month for students as well as monthly zines. Additionally, The Salemite is dedicated to engaging with our alumni reading base, and has been providing alums with the opportunity to buy a subscription box with handcrafted Salemite gear, and every print issue of the semester.
In February of 2026, a group of about twenty reporters and photographers represented Salem College at the North Carolina College Media Conference, and for the first time in The Salemite’s history, won an award for Best In Show in the small school category. Since then, The Salemite has expanded its online news presence with the establishment of a breaking news cohort team focused on providing Salem College students with daily, accurate, and unbiased journalism.
