With the month of February comes the season of love, commonly marked by Valentine’s Day festivities such as candlelit dinners coupled with sweet treats and handwritten notes, but a local Winston-Salem group celebrated the holiday differently this year. In its first-ever presentation of “Be Mine: A Valentine’s Playlist”, the Winston-Salem Symphony provided a unique date night alternative for couples and friends who were eager to celebrate the spirit of love through music.
Hosted on Saturday, Feb. 14, the Winston-Salem Symphony put on a seasonally themed performance to commemorate the holiday of love. Carefully planned to have an early evening start at 5 p.m., the intermission-free event was designed to “easily allow for a 7 pm dinner,” according to Winston-Salem Symphony’s ticket posting.
The symphony’s musical repertoire included at least seven pieces that symbolized and conveyed emotions of love, such as “Crazy For You Overture” by George Gershwin, “Clair de Lune” by Claude Debussy, and “Some Enchanted Evening” from the musical “South Pacific.” This seasonal performance was conducted by Winston-Salem Symphony’s Musical Director Michelle Merill, who was joined by soprano singer Jodi Burns as the star of the event.
The Winston-Salem Symphony is known for putting on themed performances and creating an ambiance that keeps audiences engaged, and the “Be Mine: Valentine’s Day Playlist” was certainly no exception. With both romance and music in the air, the performance was a success in bringing the community together through the spirit of love.
