According to ESPN’s 2026 article by Jeff Kassouf, “Trinity Rodman contract saga ends with record Spirit deal”, Trinity Rodman became the highest-paid women’s soccer player by signing a three-year contract valuing two million dollars a year with the Washington Spirit, where she began her professional career. Following her debut in 2021, Rodman swiftly became a household name in American soccer and has been a great advocate for equal pay in sports ever since. After ending the initial contract with the Washington Spirit, Rodman was a free agent for around three weeks and had constantly voiced her wish to stay in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) despite salary-cap limits that had led to a stalemate between her and the league.
Additionally, ESPN’s 2025 article by the ESPN News Services “NWSL, Spirit go ‘back and forth’ on Trinity Rodman deal” explains that as Olympic Gold Medalist, Rodman’s contract negotiation had gained great media attention, especially following the European clubs’ interest in her and D.C. Power’s offer to join the newly formed Gainbridge Super League.
Focusing on the United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) and NWSL, contract negotiations are always complicated because of the league’s salary cap rules, especially those imposed by its competition handbook and collective bargaining agreement. Despite the growing popularity and viewership of women’s Soccer, the restrictions on compensation increase. Unsurprisingly, the Spirit’s bid for an increase in Rodman’s salary was rejected because it was thought to be unreasonable. NWSL even intended to backload her salary following impending media-rights talks despite Rodman arguably being one of the Washington Spirit’s biggest stars and an asset to Women’s Soccer. They did not take into account that losing Rodman to European Clubs would have been the largest blow to the NWSL since the departures of fellow USWNT stars Alyssa Thompson and Naomi Girma to Chelsea last year.
Not only does this generational talent bring many eyes to women’s sports, but Rodman’s advocacy regarding adjustments in the Women’s Salary Cap and other parity concerns sets a precedent for future contract negotiations for women in sports. Her successful contract negotiations have gained positive feedback from fellow athletes, including her partner, American Tennis Professional Player, World Number Nine (9), Ben Shelton. The couple recently gained attention on Instagram when Shelton fired back at a fan who made a misogynistic remark towards Rodman by proudly quoting, “the highest paid women soccer player in the world by the way.”
