As of April 12, United States Vice President, JD Vance, has left Pakistan following peace talk efforts between the US and Iran.
According to a CNBC news article published April 11, written by Terri Cullen, Azhar Sukri, and Kevin Breuninger titled, “Vance heads back to the U.S. without striking a deal with Iran to bring an end to the war”, the peace talks held in Pakistan between the US and Iran have come to a close. In a press conference held in Islamabad, Vance noted that peace talks with Iran went on for about “21 hours.” An agreement was seemingly not able to be reached because, according to Vance, Iran would not agree to not pursuing nuclear weapons.
Vance had attended peace talks with special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and noted he spoke with the President several times during the peace talks. According to The Guardian, President Trump was not present at the peace talks in Pakistan, and instead was in Miami watching an Ultimate Fighting Championship match with US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
The Iranian delegation was led by Iranian Parliament’s Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf. According to CNBC news, Iranian delegates arrived at the talk dressed in all-black, and “carried shoes and bags of some students killed during the U.S. bombing of a school next to a military compound.”
As reported on by CNBC news, communications from Iran’s state media say negotiations were not able to be reached because the United States refused to agree to war reparations and a ceasefire in Lebanon. While Iran continues to block the Strait of Hormuz, a channel responsible for a significant portion of global oil transportation, President Trump refuses to budge on his demands.
While the deadline approaches for the two-week ceasefire, tensions continue to rise between the US and Iran, as Israel continues to target Lebanon’s Iranian-backed group, Hezbollah, which has resulted in over 2,000 deaths according to Lebanon’s health ministry.
