On Wednesday, Sept. 24, the Salem Spirits went up against their biggest competitors, the Southern Virginia Knights. The game on this day was a tough one for both teams, but at the end of the game, the score was 3-1 with Salem bringing a victory home. The Spirits won the first two sets, but the Knights managed to win in the third set. This led to an anxiety-inducing battle in the fourth set, where both teams were at 24 points, the Spirits needing to score two more points, while the Knights only needed one. Everyone was on the edge of their seats. Would the Knights score and bring us to a fifth set, or would the Spirits manage to gain the two points they needed for the victory? With great perseverance, the Spirits scored those two points and won it all. This was huge for the Spirits, not just because they beat the Knights, but because they got their revenge. On Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, the Spirits and the Knights were up against each other once again. Unfortunately, the Spirits lost 2-3 that day, knocking them out of the USA South Athletic Conference that year. Regardless, the Spirits came back from defeat and are better than ever!
On Wednesday, Oct. 8, Salem College’s volleyball team went up against Brevard College in a home game. The battle was a nail-biter, but regardless, our Spirits shined through with a clean sweep and showed Brevard why we run this city! The Spirits won with a final score of 3-0, and in total, they racked up 34 kills against the Tornadoes. Senior player, Aspen Bradley (#4), contributed to the count with a total of 10 kills from this game. Ella Brameus (#2), Leah Rymer (#3), and Sadie Rich (#17) also contributed between five to seven kills. Adding onto the kills, Rymer helped lead the team to victory by providing 22 assists.
Look out for some of these players next year in beach volleyball!
