The Salem College Women’s Volleyball Team kicked off its 2025 season on Aug. 29 and Aug. 30 at the Great Lakes Crossover in Sandusky, Ohio. According to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the event was recognized as one of the largest Division III tournaments in the United States, with approximately 20 teams competing (gliac.org, 2024). The Spirits’ goal was clear: enjoy the tournament and prepare for the upcoming conference season.
Following a successful 2024 season in which the team finished 30-6, Salem faced the challenge of rebuilding after losing four starters. Despite these changes, the team focused on offensive strength and the opportunity to gain valuable experience against top-tier competition. Excitement was high as Salem, one of the tournament’s smallest teams, took to the court.
Several Salem athletes delivered standout performances over the weekend. Madison Bozarth led the team with 36 digs, Aspen Bradley topped the blocks and kills columns with 8 and 30, respectively, and Leah Rymer recorded an impressive 87 assists over the two matches.
With little time to rest, the Spirits faced another formidable opponent, Alleghany College. The Gators won the first set 25-19, but Salem responded with a close battle in the second, falling just short at 26-24.
Despite early setbacks, the team’s game continues to improve as players gain a better understanding of their roles and begin to gel as a unit. With new faces emerging and returning leaders leading the way, the Spirits are laying the groundwork for a promising season.
