As a commuter, I sometimes feel like I take my small town for granted during breaks. Coming home everyday to the town I’ve always known, I never long for it. Only after being away on a trip, does the wistfulness set in. Nevertheless, I know there is magic to be found in Elkin, North Carolina. This year, the town really decked the halls and Jimmy Stewart would look right at home strolling down main street, à la It’s a Wonderful Life.

One of my favorite Christmas Time traditions in Elkin is the annual Light Up Night. All of the businesses stay open late, there’s a live nativity scene, and I always see at least a dozen people I know. Light Up Night gets better each year as our downtown area continues to grow. It has become a sort of annual showcase of the thriving restaurants, venues, and galleries in our little trail town.

It’s nice to see Elkin make a comeback after going through a period of economic decline. Nowadays, you can easily spend an entire day eating, shopping, and exploring. If you’re a coffee connoisseur, you’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of coffee shops to choose from to fuel your afternoon of exploration. The Reeves Theater has live music and if you’re hungry, I recommend the shepherd’s pie at Southern on Main. Elkin Antiques and Collectibles Mall is a place I can easily spend hours in and there truly is something for everyone there.

The Mountains-to-Sea Trail passes through Elkin and is a huge draw for interesting visitors seeking outdoor adventures. Our segment is pretty special (yes, I’m biased) and every spring Elkin hosts NC Trail Days, which includes four days of special events and hikes for every age and interest group. I love going on the history hikes that happen during Trail Days because there’s always some interesting Elkin lore revealed in dramatic fashion (ask me about the tunnels).
During break, my dad and I are planning to take a trip to Stone Mountain State Park for a cold weather hike. Stone Mountain is a short drive from Elkin and it is a must for any outdoorsy itinerary. The park is home to a host of wildlife including black bear, white-tailed deer, and the eastern newt. It’s also one of my favorite places to photograph rare native plant species. In the summer, it’s a great place to go swimming or trout fishing.
Fun fact, my great-grandmother was born and raised in a small log cabin located in what is now part of the park. In the vicinity of the cabin remnants is a little known landmark known as The Devil’s Hand Rock, aptly named because it is a large boulder that has an indention in the shape of a giant hand. Making the pilgrimage to this place at approximately age 5, guided by my dad, is a core memory. If you ever decide to visit Elkin, be sure to take a detour to Stone Mountain!
I’m looking forward to spending time with my family and friends this holiday season and finding time for rest and relaxation in my small town. I’m surrounded by so much beauty and it’s easy to take it all for granted. I’m grateful for this opportunity to take the time to appreciate it all.
