Salem College’s Writing Center celebrated its 30th birthday on Sept. 3, in the Gramley Library. The party honored the writing center staff’s dedication and the success they have given to Salem students.

The celebration was a hit with balloon arches, cake, and visits from proud alumni. More than 60 students came to enjoy the company of their peers and stand united to honor the writing center. Dr. Katie Manthey, professor of English and Writing Studies, has been its director since 2015 and is still passionate about providing students with what they need to succeed academically.  Dr. Manthey finds uniqueness in Salem’s ability to build a loving community that shows students and staff they are valued.

The center currently has eight students on the staff and one intern. Three staff members, Joella Cleary, Anna Rymer, and Suryka Kom, will be proudly attending the International Writing Centers Association Conference to represent Salem College. Cleary and Rymer both have work being academically published. Being a member of the Writing Center teaches leadership and organizational skills as well as helping students.

Due to funding changes, the writing center has a more limited schedule this year. The importance of supporting the dedicated staff and director can not be overlooked. When asked how students can help the writing center maintain its presence on campus, Dr. Manthey says “Keep coming” and “Use us”. The Writing Center will be open for ten weeks during the 2024-2025 school year. Remember to make appointments and utilize the consulting services to better your writing skills.

If you missed the Writing Center’s birthday party, don’t worry. The celebration will continue all school year. Look out for events in the library and support the staff.
