After an eventful debate on Sept. 10, Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, started her “New Way Forward” tour to garner votes from North Carolina, a historical swing state.

On Sept. 12, Harris began her tour to turn the swing state blue in Charlotte, NC, where just a few weeks ago former President Donald Trump spoke to the Fraternal Order of the Police’s Board of Trustees. Both candidates have been paying close attention to North Carolina in hopes of winning it over in the electoral college. Despite having been a red state for the past several years, North Carolina is one of several swing states that have been essential in determining historical victories for candidates. In 2016, it helped solidify Trump’s election to office, and in 2008, the state played a critical role in electing Barack Obama, America’s first African-American president. This year, North Carolina could play a hand in electing not only the first woman, but the first woman of color, into the White House.

After her appearance in Charlotte, Harris headed to the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, along with NC Governor Roy Cooper, Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan, and NC Representative Kathy Manning. Other Democratic candidates who are also running for office spoke on their campaigns’ focal points while endorsing Harris. Mo Green, democratic candidate for NC school superintendent, reinstated his views on the importance of public and accessible education. Green also stated his position against heavy censorship in schools. Green’s Republican opponent, Michele Morrow, takes a more conservative approach to improving education. Morrow’s background as a homeschool teacher for her own children leads to her belief in creating a public education system that aligns with parents’ values. Josh Stein, democratic candidate for NC governor, also touched on important points of his campaign. One major issue that pertains to young voters is legislation to protect reproductive rights. Stein closed off his address by calling NC voters to action. He encouraged NC voters to engage as much as possible in canvassing and advocating to turn North Carolina blue.

A roar of applause and cheering overtook the stadium as soon as Harris made her way across the stage to the podium. “I have always fought for the people.”, said Harris. In a strategic effort to debunk her opponent’s campaign rhetoric, Harris reiterated in many ways that she is for the American people. She brought up the points in her career when she directly advocated for marginalized groups, such as when she was a California prosecutor, and her anecdote on why she is so keen on protecting small businesses. Harris also spoke on her economic plan, including tax cuts and focusing on making essential resources affordable for Americans.

“And when we fight, we win.” Harris remarked as she looked out into the audience of excited North Carolinians. With one last smile and wave to the crowd, Vice President Harris left the stage and left a lasting impression on voters.
